A Tex Avery Tribute

February 29th, 2008

avery_frame.jpg

Here is a great tribute to Tex Avery, cut together by Kevin Langley.

There are a lot of great gags in here. One of my favorites of the bunch is the hand getting smashed so flat by a mallet that you can see through it.

Great stuff!

TROWBACK THURSDAYS (Tennessee Tuxedo)

February 28th, 2008

As a kid, I use to enjoy hearing the voice of Tennessee Tuxedo(voiced by Don Adams) and Chumley. The cartoon was entertaining for it’s time. Simple but funny. The stories were silly and easy to follow as Tennessee and his pal would make attempts to escape from the zoo and try to obtain odd jobs to fit in to human society.
Tennessee and Chumley regularly escaped from the zoo, only to find trouble in the outside world. When faced with more trouble than they could bear, the pair would turn to their friend, a college professor named Phineas J. Whoopee (voiced by Larry Storch, later seen on F Troop). “Mr. Whoopee”, as he was known, was extremely knowledgeable on all subjects, and would frequently lecture the pair on such diverse topics as the physics behind the hot air balloon, to how musicians become popular. His lectures were illustrated and animated on [Read more…]

Animaniacs: Educational songs

February 27th, 2008

Aside from the funny antics of the Animaniacs, there were also educational songs from time to time that actually helped with the memorization of facts. The songs covered things like the Presidents of the United States, the 50 states and their capitols, the nations of the world and more.

The show itself was very well animated, and had some great writing. In a time when so many shows are imports and redubs, it would be refreshing to get a show like Animaniacs again.

Get Crackin’!

February 27th, 2008

cool Freddie
Get crackin’ on those essay and nomination ideas, folks! We’re looking for some cool nomination categories, as well as some good ideas for an essay topic. Last year’s topic was “Why Are You Excited About the Future of Cartoons?”. We’re looking for a hot topic this year and you only have until 5pm EST on Friday, February 29th to submit them. I thought I’d post some essays from last year, to whet your appetite. Check out this great essay from Joe Strike. Once you’ve been thoroughly inspired, send your essay idea to: vj@channelfrederator.com.

Joe Strike is a regular contributor to Animation World Network. He also covers the animation and comics scene for the New York Daily News and knows all the words to the Super Chicken theme song.

“No, it’s not ‘pronoun trouble.’ You’re here at this event, reading this program book not because you believe cartoons are diseased, dead or dying, but because

Welcome to My Life, A Channel Frederator Featured Film!

February 26th, 2008

I love this film by Elizabeth Ito, it has everything you want out of an animated short. Monsters, sashimi, and a touch of reality tv.
I’ve interviewed her before on the fred blogs before, and wanted to make this one a bit different.
So, I interviewed the main character from her film, which turned out to be a character in real life, her brother Doug Ito!

Drunken Blonde Twins.
This title might be a little misleading.
Watching these cartoons, however, is a bit like hanging out with a pair of drunken blonde twins.
Except without the twins, all the blondeness, and the alcohol.
I guess all you are left with is Fun. And that’s not half bad, right?

Animated Johnny Cash

February 26th, 2008

In “El Viaje Misterioso de Nuestro Jomer” (also known as “The Mysterious Voyage of Our Homer”), Homer takes a bad trip after eating some “Insanity Chili” and meets his spirit guide, voiced by Johnny Cash. It was amazing to me how well Johnny Cash’s voice worked for animation. It’s a shame he didn’t do more voice work. Today would have been Johnny Cash’s 76th birthday.

I looked and looked for a clip from the show, but couldn’t find one. Here’s a clip of Johnny Cash singing with Oscar from Sesame Street instead.

Have a rotten day!

“The Dukes”

February 26th, 2008

“The Dukes” (1983-1984) was the animated series from Hanna-Barbera, based on “The Dukes of Hazzard” (1979-1985).

The cartoon series started during the Coy and Vance part of “The Dukes of Hazzard”, and featured them as the main characters as well. When actors Tom Wopat and John Schneider returned to “The Dukes of Hazzard”, they took over as the stars of the cartoon as well.
