Reuse of animation
After my previous post on the reuse of animation in the title sequences of “the Jetsons” and “Space Ghost”, blog reader Kevin Smith pointed out the reuse of animation in some Disney films.
I was looking for some examples of this on YouTube, and found the posted video instead. While I knew that some animation sequences were reused in some other shots, I had no idea it was also used in such an exact way. In the video you’ll notice that shot for shot, the timing and poses are identical.
While this happened on some of the films during Walt’s involvement in the studio (before he died in December of 1966), it seems to have been much more frequent in the films that were completed after his passing.

This shouldn’t be a big surprise. I believe in “Illusion of Life” they concede that they did this and even suggest it as a cost-cutting technique.
But there are way bigger swipes than these in the early Disney shorts. Large portions of “Skeleton Dance” are repeated in a Mickey short (”Haunted House” I believe) and the famous Pluto flypaper sequence is repeated in Donald’s “Beach Picnic” (They are certainly lucky Donald had the foresight to bring a pad of flypaper to the beach!)
These re-uses don’t even involve redrawing the action for a new character.

We could also add to the list for the reuse of animation, the 1967-70 Spider-man cartoon when Ralph Bakshi supervised the 2nd and 3rd season, he recycled and re-used the same sequences and it even recycled some plotlines including 2 borrowed from another cartoon titled Rocket Robin Hood. The reuse of animation on Disney movies was nothing to compare to what Ralph Bakshi did.
