Space is only so big: Space Ghost meets the Jetsons

December 3rd, 2007

Have a look at these intro sequences to two of the best series from Hanna Barbera:

The Jetsons actually predates Space Ghost by several years. It aired on Sunday nights on ABC from September 23, 1962 to March 3, 1963. In the intro, we see a space scene that pushes in tight on a future version of Earth. The sequence then continues with the action on the planet, or rather up in the atmosphere of the planet.

Space Ghost debuted in 1966 in “Space Ghost and Dino Boy”, where Space Ghost shared time with an unrelated segment called Dino Boy in the Lost Valley. The intro for this show appears to use the identical space push in from the Jetsons, but with the color shifted. The push in also cuts away before we push all the way in to Earth.

I know Hanna Barbera were the kings of cheaper animation, but I never knew of the reuse of sequences across series, especially in something as seemingly unique as show intros. This one is especially interesting, given the very different nature and art style of the two programs.

Does anyone know of any more sequence or shot sharing between cartoon series?

Beauty and the Beast used the ballroom dance scene from Sleeping Beauty. Belle and the Beast dance shot-for-shot exactly like Aurora and Philip.
