November 16th, 2007

fd5acf8089.jpg

Computer animation is an expensive art form… or is it? Blender is the free open source 3D content creation suite, available for all major operating systems under the GNU General Public License.

If you’ve never used Blender, you may be surprised at just how much stuff is in there.

Softbody Dynamics? Yep.

A node based compositor? Yep.

A paint based sculpting tool? Yep.

Whether you are looking to get into computer animation, or have been doing computer animation for a while in another package, take a look at Blender. With a powerful tool set and an extended community of support, it’s a software package that is quickly becoming a powerhouse.

Premiere: 20 Benchmark Films in Computer Animation History

November 14th, 2007

Premiere has posted their list of 20 benchmark films in computer animation.

While some selections are spot on (who can argue that “Tron” is not a benchmark of CG), some leave you scratching your head as to why they were listed instead of other films. For example, they list “Radioland Murders” but not “Toy Story”. Also, three of the films on the list haven’t been released yet. Huh?

Here’s their full list:

Tron

The Last Starfighter

Young Sherlock Holmes

Luxo Jr.

Willow

Who Framed Roger Rabbit

The Abyss

Terminator 2: Judgement Day

Jurrasic Park

Forrest Gump

Radioland Murders

Titanic

The Matrix

Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers

The Polar Express

300

Beowulf

Speed Racer

Super-intern James Sugrue has been coming in for a few weeks and doing some fantastic animation work on “The Meth Minute 39″ series. He’s an old-school character animator who worships Bob Clampbett and you can see his real understanding of wackiness in his work.

Take a look at more of his work here on his blog.
