Rid, A Channel Frederator Featured Film

June 25th, 2007

Cristina Paulos is an artist/animator out of Las Vegas, Nevada soon to move to New York.
Her and I both met at Calarts in Character Animation, and have become collaborators in the Las Vegas Art Scene as the incredible duo of art fantasticness known as the Double Date Collective. I’ve always loved her film, Rid, which made it’s debut on Channel Fred last week. So I was very happy when she submitted her film to us. Thanks Cristina!

1. How did you come up with the idea for this film?
I can’t remember what I had for breakfast this morning and your asking me about my film I made 5 years ago? LOL
I’m not sure how I came up with the story. I’m pretty sure it started with a drawing I did of a little girl with horse teeth grin and yellow galoshes. The story had to be on a rain day and the rest fell into place. A rainy day story(tragic)! I don’t think I could tell a story like this now. I think I was more brave then.
Oh yeah, Colin O’Regan is a Calarts musician who composed the music.

2. Who are some of your influences?
I’m influenced by a lot of children’s storybooks I read when I was a child. I love the Grimm Fairly tales, Edward Gory, Classical Fairly tales and World Folk tales and fables. These are the kind of stories, pictures, and images that made an impact on me, and that is the kind of stories I want to tell.
Watching Shelly Duvall’s Fairy Tales Theatre with my sister was always a happy memory for me.

3. What do you do when you get stuck creatively?
I go through all the emotions; this helps me to understand what I’m feeling. Then I stop and breathe, and go outside. Beyond the parking lots and the television sets, heading for unknown terrains. Look at the world as if you are seeing it for the first time. Before you know it “creative” energy and thoughts will jump out at you!

4. Recently, I posted about your art before; your Hanafuda based “Who Cares For you?”solo art show in Las Vegas. I noticed that the Twin girls in those Paintings bear a resemblance to the little girl in RID. Is she the same character? How did that character evolve into two?
I often draw characters with one eye larger. Normally, I don’t make a model sheets to follow when I animate, so I unintentionally made her right eye larger in one scene and the left eye larger in the next. I then realized that there are twins playing parts in all my films. The first time both characters appeared together was in a portrait I painted. Seeing them together really creeped me out! Like seeing your right and left brain be in peace with each other.

5. What are you working on currently?
I’m just working on getting my sh*t together. My place is a mess and I’m in the process of moving to New York City. I gotta find a job (or two or three!), anyone out there wanna hire me as an illustrator/animator?
I’m currently working on the book design, copy and layout on Jeaux Janovsky’s sketch/art book, entitled “Potty Humor: The Collected Half Assed Works of Jeaux Janovsky 2005-2007”. It has a great forward by no stranger to Frederator, Pen Ward. It will be our first Double Date Collective book project, I’m really exited about it. I hope to get it out in print sometime this summer. So send your book preorder requests to doubledatecollective@gmail.com!!
I also just wrapped up my solo Art show. A second edition of my “Who Cares For You?” hanafuda playing cards are available for purchase. You can send me an email at cristina.paulos@gmail.com if you are interested in purchasing.

Thanks for submitting Rid Cristina. We really enjoyed it. See you in New York soon.

Seriously. If yr film or short is featured on CH.Fred, what better way to promote yrself than embedding the Fred on yr very own website, blog or myspace page? For the extreme Fredheads, there’s the ultimate “Always Fresh” embedding code.
What are you waiting for? All the cool kids are doing it. I have mine up on my Myspace Page now.

I had the pleasure of watching this film evolve while Cristina was in my 3rd or 4th year story class at CalArts.

It was absolutely one of the best films I saw come from that school, and I’m really happy that it has a life/audience on “The Fred.”

Kudos for the Fred-Heads for seeing the subtle genius of Cristina’s work.

Cristina is alway full of surprises. This is one of my favorite film she did few years ago. Anything she does has a little Cristina twist. She will keep surprising us with her rare talent. Gannbattene (^_^)
