June 6th, 2007

From Paul Dini:

Onto Hollywood, and the demise of Warner Bros. Animation studio. Well, technically the animation division will continue on in a reduced capacity at another location, but this week WB Corporate shuttered its large building in Sherman Oaks. The studio was started in 1989 at the Sherman Oaks Galleria, where it produced such hits as ANIMANIACS, TINY TOON ADVENTURES, PINKY & THE BRAIN, BATMAN, JUSTICE LEAGUE and many others.

OMG~ that’s horrible!!!

Why is it that everything that I know and love from my childhood is dying away?!???? The WB animation studio was awesome! I loved the Batman:TAS and Batman Beyond, and Justicle League+ JLU were like, the best shows EVER!!!

And how can any of us forget Wakko’s song that helped us learn all 50 states and capitals?!?

T_T

(oh yea. first comment. whewt.)

That’s too bad. I was just talking about the Warner Brothers studio tonight at dinner.

floyd bishop didnt u have a animation company in scranton, PA

It was in Honesdale, PA… now it’s in San Diego, CA. Dunder Mifflin is in Scranton.

Damnit, damnit all to hell. My childhood was Batman, TAS.
BLAST IT ALL!

Long Live FreakaZoid!

When I came into the mainstream animation biz in 1992, Warner Bros. Animation was *the* place in town. Fresh off of TIny Toon Adventures, in production on Batman and Animaniacs, they paid the best, did the best, they set the standard for the resurgence of kid’s animation. Bob Daly and Terry Semel ran Warner Bros. and they recruited Jean MacCurdy to keep Steven Speilberg happy. And Steven wanted to make cartoons as good as the ones he remembered from childhood. Jean creamed the most talented the industry had to offer and was off to the races. Along with the Simpsons, everyone at WB knew they were all that. R.I.P. WBAS.

I visited WB animation last year….It was an empty shell full of cubes and animation tables. After years of wanting to work for them, I had finally started landing jobs. after my visit I was depressed beyond belief. It kind of dashed my dreams of the industry a bit.

Luckily a producer there kind of put me a little at ease and showed me the floor plan for the build out of their new facility. Turns out they are going back to the original animation building before they moved to Sherman Oaks. So it’s back to the WB lot for them.

Yeah, it’s really sad to see WB close it’s doors. For me it is like a family moving away. The kind folks at WB gave me my first break on Tiny Toons way back in 1989 freelance in-betweening for a studio called Kennedy Cartoons (when they sub contracted the work out to them) while I was still in NJ. Then again they gave me my next big break when they hired me to work full time on Tiny Toons, Animaniancs and Tazmania doing layout for them. They yet again helped me when they gave me first directing job on PInky and the Brain (I moved up)Histerian and Detention. They next gave me yet another big break when they collaborated with Cartoon Network to help me make Swaroop, the first cartoon starring an East Indian boy. But wait! There’s more! A few years later, they hired me to not only direct Xiaolin Showdown, but also picked up TWO development projects with me at the same time! I spent 8 years there off and on during my career and some of the memories were the best I’ve had professionally and personally. I met my wife through a P.A. working on Tazmania. I got married while working on Animaniacs, my wife had our first daughter while I was working on Pinky and the Brain and I lost my grandmother as well during that show’s production. We had our second daughter during the production of Histeria. I lost my mom during production of Xiaolin Showdown. A large part of my personal memories are tied in some way to that studio. I owe quite a debt to Warner Bros. and Jean McCurdy, Tom Ruegger, Christopher Keenan, Linda Steiner and Sander Schwartz. They have helped to keep me employed and gave me many good years of memories. That’s all Folks!

My very first full-time industry job was as a character layout artist on “Taz-Mania”, (and I met Mr. Milo there, too…). I also came back after a brief hiatus at H-B into their short-lived feature animation department doing lots of development and story work. WB was THE place to be back then. What happened!?!! They have such a rich and important animation history - it would be crazy to just let it all go.

This is so sad. I used to really like the afternoon block of cartoons they had. Good luck to those that are left.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I LOVED ANIMANIACS ETC…, THIS IS AN OUTRAGE, I DEMAND AN EXPLANATION.

These animation series were my favorites for what was a very joy-filled childhood thank to them. Know that nothing dies in vain if we know the lesson. I, for one, know that all the jokes, ideas, knowledge, and stories of my past will never be forgotten.

Best animation studio of the past decade.

Our generation will never forget it.

This is a sad day… I can certifiably say I grew up watching Batman: TAS, Pink & The Brain, Animaniacs, Tiny Toon Adventures, etc., and had a great time on the later shows like Justice League, Static Shock, and others.

and what are we left with now?

“The Batman” “Naruto” “One Piece”. All CRAP.

I almost feel bad for today’s kids. They’re missing out.

Just to be clear. WB Animation still exists. The studio’s moving locations.
