Yan Theriault is an animator who runs his own one man animation studio, based out of Montreal, Quebec, where he produces his Phone Prankster show: The Scamtoons.
Keeping with the irreverent traditions of Phone Prank luminaries such as the Jerky Boys, Longmont Potion-Castle and Comedy Central’s Crank Yankers; Yan is part of the new generation keeping the phoneline tapped.
Lucky for Channel Frederator, Yan has call waiting and he took the time to answer a few questions for us!

CH.Fred:1. How did you come up with the idea for this cartoon?
YT:The final idea came out of two frustrations I just had. The first being that I don’t have access to voice talent and the second being that I’m not yet very talented at scripting and writing jokes or sketches. Being a prankster myself, it hit me in the face one night. I came up with this idea that would give me access to various types of character and scenarios which I wouldn’t even think about myself. It’s like a reality-cartoon in a sense.

2. Who are some of your influences?
Joe Cartoon, Stan Lee,Joseph Barbara, Hergé, Gotlib.

3. What do you do when you get stuck creatively?
Close my notebook and take a walk. I use my surrounding mostly. If that doesn’t do it, I go to sleep. In my case, a good night of sleep is very therapeutic, in all sphere of my life.

4. How do you go about picking your victims? Do you randomly pick them out of a phonebook?
Usually, I come up with my basic scenario. Then I do a search in Canada411.com and start from the very first on top of the list. My favorites are commerces, company’s or governmental services. They always start up being nice to you.

5. What are you working on currently?
I just released another sketch which you might want to take a look at for a further episode of the Fred
It is titled “Parachute Malfunction”, that should give you an idea. I am also working on another Scamtoons that I pranked not too long ago and a little 20 to 30 seconds sketch series that should be up before the end of the summer.
