Character evolution: Tom & Jerry

One thing I’ve posted about a few times here is the evolution of a character. Today I’m posting a few different versions of “Tom & Jerry” to show how the characters evolved over time. Which version of the pair do you like best?
Puss Gets the Boot (1940):In this first cartoon, they were known as “Jasper and Jinx”

I realize I’m in the minority here, but I’ve always just loved the Chuck Jones Tom & Jerry best. The expressions are, to me, the best in Chuck’s career, and they really captured my young imagination when I was a little kid watching them on a UHF Tom & Jerry package. Since so much had been done with the characters by then, Chuck so often went in bizarre directions with the characters, and I’ve always liked that.

My least favorite were the strange ones with weird audio from Gene Deitch and his studio, Rembrandt Films. Those were done in Prague, Czechoslovakia. I think as cartoons, they were fine, but when you use an established set of characters and go so far away form what they were, it doesn’t work.

Hi Gang: I gotta say I love the Tom and Jerry episodes that Hanna and Barbera directed at MGM the best. All do respect to my mentor and one of my best friends; Chuck Jones. I guess I’m a classic action cartoon kind of guy.
Take care and we’ll talk soon!
