Who Is The Channel Frederator Cartoonist Of The Year?

November 30th, 2006

We need your help.

One of things we’re most looking forward to as part of The Channel Frederator Awards on January 24th is to recognize the person who the cartoon communty at large feels has made the most people in the world pay attention to animation in 2006. Now, we have some thoughts as to who that person should be (although there is some internal debate among the Frederator camp), but we’d really like to hear some suggestions from you. Is it the head of a major studio or some indie animator working out of her basement? A TV storyboard artist, the director of a theatrical feature, or the developer of some new animation software program? You tell us who you think it should be. And why. Finally, if you disagree with someone’s opinion (including ours), we want to know that, too.

So post your thoughts below. We want to hear who you think [Read more…]

Episode 58

It’s another average day at the office, until a pesky pigeon steals Max’s pencil. Watch as Max embarks on a death defying journey to get back his #2.

For those of you unfamiliar with Dave Wasson’s work, and where on Earth he came from, some of his credits include: Oh Yeah! Cartoons, “Max and His Special Problem”, featured on Episode 13 of Channel Frederator. “Max” also won an Emmy. Wasson also created the Oh Yeah! short series, “Tales From the Goose Lady”, with “Hamsel and Grande” being featured on Episode 30. He created and directed the series, “Time Squad”, has won a Clio for his commercial work, and animated the opening title sequence to the film, “Down With Love”.

When asked about “Max and the Pigeon Incident”, Dave filled me in a bit on how he came up with the idea. “Some people say that pigeons just amble along harmlessly with no [Read more…]

“Where the Wild Things Are” - CG test from 1983

November 30th, 2006

This is a test for a project based on “Where the Wild Things Are”, it featured John Lasseter’s hand animated characters on 3D computer backgrounds done by MAGI Synthevision. This was an early Disney foray into computers, but they didn’t pursue the computer as an artistic tool any further at that time. Pixar (then Lucasfilm) saw the test and did get it; they hired Lasseter.

“I was born in Florida & grew up in North Carolina as a hilbilly punk rock raver.  My mom started drawing with me before I was even two years old.
So I really have been drawing all my life.  I started creating digitally in 1995 when I moved to San Francisco, &  my skills have been building since then!
In my work, I aim for a combination of humor, cuteness, beauty & a touch of real emotion.”

It’s the year 2012, the earth has finally been consumed by media pollution - brain dead zombies fueled by fear roam the cities…. and now the news, don’t touch that dial…

Co-Creator Mat Stevens from Team Xtreme had this to say: “Myself and Rory Cooke came up with the idea as we wanted to use as much different media as possible hence the adverts on TV’s. We were originaly gonna do aliens but it came out as zombies in the end… hey its CG stuff - so its gotta be zombies, aliens or robots! (we already did robots in the first year [Read more…]

Madagascar: 2D animation principles applied to 3D animation

November 29th, 2006

madagascar-dreamworks1g.jpg

If you haven’t yet seen “Madagascar”, you should check it out. It really broke ground for making computer animation seem more like 2D animation in regards to the way characters are handled. For instance, as far as I know, it’s the first CG film that successfully makes use of what is known in 2D animation as “smear frames”. You can see these a little bit in the following clip. Watch for Alex’s hands when he is being beaten up by the old lady…

The longer that computer animation is around, the more it will start to incorporate the tricks and techniques that have been in animation since the beginning. The CG films of today are getting stronger and stronger in their animation techniques, and I hope this continues.
