In the late 1980s my ad agency had invented Nick-at-Nite, and when they (temporarily, and dumbly) abandoned the innovative ‘oldies’ format we invented for them, we ported it over to a tiny TV station outside Minneapolis, KXLI. We named the station TV Heaven 41, and asked pop-artist and filmmaker Fred Mogubgub to loan us his unique animated style of using still illustrations for the station identifications; we then commissioned Fred, International Rocketship, and various photographers and illustrations to contribute to the almost 30 pieces eventually made.

Through a series of happy accidents, one of my favorite musicians, Dr. John (nee Mac Rebennack), contributed over a dozen musical soundtracks to the project. Check out the story here. Call me crazy, but I think they are very cool.

Being reminded I might’ve saw some of these IDs used at some point in time, but I can’t pinpoint where, but I remember seeing a “TV Heaven” once on a low-power station, but it didn’t had the “41″ added.

I otherwise remember seeing the similar thing done for MTV Network’s “HA! TV Comedy Network”. God I miss that channel! I have some of those IDs and promos saved on tape myself.

I’ve also seen Mogubgub’s “Enter Hamlet” so that was rather neat to see how this concept was developed early on. I’d love to do something along those lines someday in my work if I bother to do ID’s for someone based on quotations and enough time/effort in putting those things together (perhaps do it as a promotional plug for YTMND.com, since I haven’t seen someone do that yet there).
