Dry your eyes after this one, folks. If puppies, penguins, homeless aid, and Santa don’t pull at your heartstrings, we’re not sure what will. This sweet film by Suzanne Hensler was made at Vancouver Film School.

Thanks Suzanne!

Channel Frederator Featured Film: “Twinkle Twinkle”

Simplicity at its finest. In this sweet Holiday Greeting from Mudbubble, 2 year old Andrea Georgenes belts out her “audition” for “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star”.

Chris Georgenes, Andrea’s dad, and Designer and Animator over at Mudbubble, frequently “chatted” with his 2 year old in his studio. “During one of those conversations, I turned on the microphone. Twenty minutes later I had a very cute and somewhat random assortment of songs she loved to sing. It wasn’t until a few months later that the “audition concept” came to realization. Most of the character actions were taken from real life. Andrea is already a very animated little girl. She always pulls her front curl, stretching it as straight as possible, letting go and adding her own vocal sound effect by saying “Boing!” The response to this film has inspired me to include her throughout my website, which may just be an excuse [Read more…]

Channel Frederator Featured Film: “Jingle Bell Justice”

July 26th, 2006

When the cute toys in Our Fair City start attacking, Super Santa gears up to confront Bedlam Bunny—an adorable bunny with a not-so-cute mean streak. Filmmaker Mike Bell, as usual, impresses the heck out of us.

Says Frederator’s very own Fred Seibert, “We first met Mike at Hanna-Barbera when he pitched us his short Commander Cork (which we stupidly did not make), and then he joined our OY! team as a writer on Dave Wasson’s Goose Lady fairy tales. That led him to a handful of solo cartoons for us, Super Santa being the first.

Mike’s gone on to develop a live action Santa film for Paramount and Nickelodeon, and boarding and writing for (among others) Spongebob Squarepants and My Life as a Teenage Robot.

And as we always remind, you can see all the Channel Frederator episodes from our Website, or subscribe to the whole series through iTunes.”

Thanks, Mike, for the terrific Christmas in July!

Channel Frederator Featured Film: “Mastermind”

July 24th, 2006

It’s “War of the Worlds” meets bunnies!

Says Sunil Hall, “This was my senior film at Cal Arts. The music came first. Im a big fan of Del and Dan the Automator. Thier Deltron 3030 album has lots of cool science fiction hip hop tracks, ‘Mastermind’ being one of my favorites. The film is my idea of what the songs about. (If it doesn’t make sense to you then watch it a few times. There really is a story there. Kinda.) The art was hand drawn in pencil, then scanned in to Photoshop where it was colored. A few of the backgrounds were hand painted with guache. The various layers were compiled in After Effects and edited in Premiere. It took about 8 months to complete (spread out over about 2 years). Thanks to Frederator for this great outlet for animated shorts!”

And thank you, Sunil, for without filmmakers such as yourself, Channel [Read more…]

Channel Frederator Featured Film: “The Semi-Mundane Adventures of the C# Developer Who Wears A Light Red Top Hat

July 19th, 2006

redtophat2.jpg

It’s a day in the life of a job that only a C# Developer could love. “73 compile errors? PC load letter? Coffee coffee coffee”

Says Filmmaker Aaron Styles, “I did this animation as part of a Game Development course. We were required to make an animation using only 2 colours and very limited shades.

After seeing everyone else doing very somber “political” animations I decided to do something light and funny. I think I hit both of those [Read more…]

Channel Frederator Featured Film: “Fetch!”

July 18th, 2006

I came across Nina Paley’s website recently, and was mesmerized by this film she did. It’s a simple concept, but the way she executes her film will definitely change your “perspective” on the game of fetch!

Says Paley, “Fetch!” started long ago as a cardboard puzzle-game I designed, a thing that let you put tiles together to create optical illusions. When I got into animation in 1998, it occurred to me I could make a film based on the same principles. I animated it with Flash at 24fps on a black “Wall Street” PowerBook, with the intention of rendering it to 35mm film. And render I did, with Monaco Labs in San Francisco. “Fetch!” was the first Flash-to-35mm festival film I’m aware of. It didn’t make a huge splash when it came out in 2001, but it’s enjoyed a long slow build of popularity, especially among kids and kid’s festivals. Which is [Read more…]

Channel Frederator Featured Film: “Float”

Joel Trussell, the man who brought you “War Photographer” in Channel Frederator Episode 2, is back with another music video that does nothing but rock our world.

Says Trussell, “I actually met the Atomic Swindlers back in 2004 through our mutual agent at the time. They approached me about directing a music video for one of their tracks and I was excited to try out a sci-fi piece. The Swindlers gave me full creative freedom, so it was great being able to create all these characters and a micro-world for them to exist in. Ultimately I allowed the music to dictate much of what happened in the piece, but I tried to weave in the story of a heroine rescuing her friend from this ring of thugs. Oh, I’d also like to mention some of my ol’ Seattle friends Doug Gordon, Jason Medisky and Peter Hon were a great help in animating this [Read more…]

Channel Frederator Featured Film: “Egghunt”

July 12th, 2006

egghunt.jpg

“Egghunt” is the tale of a hungry caveman on a quest to fill his stomach. He discovers a nest full of plump eggs just inches beyond his reach and must devise a way to get them before he loses them all…

Says Filmmaker Paul Yan, “I was a freelance flash animator before realizing that motion design was just my precursor to character animation. I decided to study at Cogswell College with a concentration in just that. Egghunt served as my graduating thesis project. I was searching high and low for story ideas when I realized I had one right under my nose. My mom used to tell me this Chinese parable about the difference between heaven and hell. The moral of the story made for a great premise, so I developed it, and after several iterations I had a story about a caveman!”

Thank you Paul, for your wonderful film!

Ian Jones-Quartey

July 7th, 2006

Straight from the Interweb!

“Fantastic!”

That is all that can be said about Ian Jones-Quartey. His raw talent oozes the hand drawn-rubber hose-old school style of his new film entitled “Unfair”.

Totally worthy of the Channel Frederator.
