Rumpus Room Productions: “The Grouch”

. “In a time where the cars had four feet and a head, there lived an old man who wished he were dead.”

Says filmmaker Eliot Morrison, “I came up with the idea because for the longest time I’ve wanted to do a story in the vein of a children’s fairytale. I originally wrote and
illustrated it just as a book, but I realized it could be a lot better as
a song (and eventually, an animation!) So I got my friend Eric Tilton to write the music, and a couple more friends to help perform it, and that was that!

When it came time to animate it, I knew I wanted to keep the original
flat, linear feel of a kid’s book. Simple was definitely better, and I was
certainly working with what I had. I ended up having a lot of fun with
painting and coloring it too, using a lot of photographed textures from
around the city (Toronto.)

Thanks so much for the wonderful film!
