Doug Bresler: “Doogtoons Asks A Ninja!”

May 31st, 2006

beinganinja1.jpg

We first came across Doug Bresler and the wonder that is Doogtoons when he submitted “Haig’s Childhood” to Channel Frederator about 7 or 8 months ago. Doug’s ability to take an interview and make it ten times more interesting through the use of animation is very impressive. “Ask a Ninja” is no exception. DThe Ninja has his own “Ask A Ninja” podcast which can be downloaded here, and Doug Bresler also has more episodes of “Nick and Haig” which can be downloaded on iTunes, or his website

Says Bresler, “The Ninja from that podcast agreed to be a guest on my show. I nearly escaped with my life! He is one deadly fellow. Check out their really funny show when you can. My favorite episode is “Ninja Santa”.

My show Doogtoons is an animated interview show. I like to put it like this… It’s just like Oprah, but a lot more intimate and a [Read more…]

Meredith Gran: “Polar-oid”

May 25th, 2006

When a cute little boy gets chased by an angry polar bear, a sweet girl follows his picture trail and comes to his rescue. Or does she…

Says Meredith Gran, “The idea, like so many, came from a bunch of sketches in my book that evolved into a story. A friend and I brainstormed with the characters for a bit, and the story practically wrote itself from there. I really like making short stories out of the chemistry between a few characters. :)”

Thanks Meredith for your wonderful film, and your support of Channel Frederator. We love you!

Joanna Davidovich: “Juxtaposer”

May 18th, 2006

Girl meets cat. Cat goes psycho. Girl and cat become friends! What a pair…

“One day I drew a little picture of a girl with a cat on her head and I was amused. While I was in college, we had the opportunity to make a film, so I made up a little story around that image. The story more or less fell together once I had the characters- I could see it all in my head pretty clearly. (And in case you’re wondering- yes, I do have an evil/adorable cat like that one.) The hard part was…well, making the damn thing. I was shaky in my animation skill (I had only one real animation class under my belt when I started production) and I went through a lot of awkward design revisions, and I cut corners to keep my deadline, which I missed anyway. But Juxtaposer taught me a lot- [Read more…]

Lori Samsel: “Fan: A Love Story”

May 18th, 2006

fan.jpg

So where does a love story with a fan begin…?

Says Lori Samsel, “I wish I had an exciting story of how I came up with the idea, but I dont. I just got really hot.

Some days I had a hard time leaving the apartment because I knew I couldn’t take my fan with me. When I would go into the gritty sunny hot nyc summer world, I’d think of other ways to beat the heat… but always thinking of my fan. So much that drinking iced tea felt like cheating. I blamed the sun for this whole conflict. The idea came to me after solving my deep internal struggle of how to work the sun into my life including the fan. I’ve grown to respect the sun (the character actually grows because of the sun). and the fan’s right here and still works!

Some people ask me why the fan doesn’t [Read more…]

Rumpus Room Productions: “The Grouch”

. “In a time where the cars had four feet and a head, there lived an old man who wished he were dead.”

Says filmmaker Eliot Morrison, “I came up with the idea because for the longest time I’ve wanted to do a story in the vein of a children’s fairytale. I originally wrote and
illustrated it just as a book, but I realized it could be a lot better as
a song (and eventually, an animation!) So I got my friend Eric Tilton to write the music, and a couple more friends to help perform it, and that was that!

When it came time to animate it, I knew I wanted to keep the original
flat, linear feel of a kid’s book. Simple was definitely better, and I was
certainly working with what I had. I ended up having a lot of fun with
painting and coloring it too, using a lot of photographed textures from

Lee Rubenstein: “Fred & Earl”

May 11th, 2006

fredearl1.jpg

Being our New York Frederator intern, Lee Rubenstein constantly finds himself going on egg runs for the staff–which is how he came up with the idea for “Fred & Earl”.

Okay…so that’s not really true. Here’s what Lee had to say about his film: “I’ve always had a thing for birds, even though I’ve never owned one. Fred (the chicken) is a character based on my good friend Tony, who is also the voice. Earl (the Plaid Penguin) is based on myself. It took 3 weeks to create, all animated in Flash.”

Lee, we thoroughly enjoyed your film. You are clearly more talented than I am. Thanks so much for submitting.

Rubberductions: “Dude Corp”

May 10th, 2006

dcprankcaller1.jpg

In this series of short shorts, Rubberductions spares no pain as they introduce us to the world that is “Dude Corp”.

Says Matt from Rubberductions: “DudeCorp is actually a real place. However to protect the identity of those who work there we were forced to recreate it in animation. Some of the things we have animated have not actually happened yet, rather, we used editing software to scroll the office we based it on into the future (this feature is disabled in most packages, but we have a crack). We then created the lead characters, Eastwood, Carpet and Marion, as programmed characters with AI, and released them into the recreated real office. Its kind of like the real world meets the world of office future dreams.”

FASCINATING. Thanks for turning our office dreams into reality!

Kyle Mohr: “Help Wanted”

May 9th, 2006

helpwanted1.jpg

It didn’t surprise me to hear that Kyle Mohr created “Help Wanted” while he was in college. The poor pizza guy reminds me of me in my first college job (minus the “guy” part). I also never tried to make pizza, but I served them here to help pay for the astronomical price of an education here. Those were the days! According to this review, the service there stinks.

Says Mohr, “When I was developing the story for Help Wanted at the Savannah College of Art and Design, my main goal first and foremost was to tell an entertaining story that had broad appeal. I also knew that I wanted to do that through a character that people could both laugh at, and feel sorry for at the same time. Somewhere along the line I realized that one of the things that people generally want is to be accepted and needed by others…
