Steven Scott: “Suburban Harmony”

When I saw this featured on Cold Hard Flash I knew I had to hunt down Steven Scott and see about featuring it on Channel Frederator. Not only did I like the animation, it turns out Steve is one of the musicians as well!

Says Steven, “The music is by the band I am in, Telemetry Orchestra. We were putting out an album in Australia and I decided that I wanted to do a video clip.
The character came first. One night I was doodling away in Illustrator and the Bowler Man just popped out pretty much as he ends up in the video. I’ve done quite a few clips which were narrative based and I really wanted to do something that was a bit more open and free, plus I wanted to do it in Flash. The idea was to do it quickly and just get it done. Unfortunately, I got quite obsessive about it and it ended up taking over two months. By the end of it I was almost broke.

There was a basic concept behind it. First I wanted to do something to emulate my favorite illustrators and animators from the 60s. I’ve always loved Heinz Edelman designs on the Yellow Submarine, plus Milton Glaser and the Push Pin studio look. As well as a whole host of brilliant poster designers like Martin Sharp and Tadanori Yokoo. So it was a way of doing that look and getting it out of my system. And I guess, secondly there was a loose concept, tying in to the song, of following the journey of the Bowler man as he makes his way home. ( Suburban Harmony )”

Thanks so much Steven for your hard work.

Melissa
