Walt Holcombe: “The Courtship of Sniffy LaPants

February 13th, 2006

4.jpg

Ahh, what a better way to conclude our Valentine’s Day episode than with a good old fashioned love story…What struck me most about The Courtship of Sniffy LaPants was how well the music flowed with the mood of the piece, and how poigniantly Walt Holcombe animates love scenes.

Elaborating on his inspiration behind making the film, Holcombe says, “My friend Lance Myers was making his brilliant Flash short, ‘The Astronomer’ (you can see Lance’s amazing work here), and my own childish sense of competition was riled. I wanted to make a cartoon that was mostly pantomime, since I think cartoons are generally too talky. My intention was to make something with a nice, strange atmosphere and pleasant visuals. I’m mostly happy with it, although it was my first attempt at character animation. The voices and music (composed by Erik Grostic, performed by Erik and three other members of Tosca - the Tango [Read more…]

Waverly Films: “Cold Hands, Warm Heart”

February 10th, 2006

I was poking around the internet one day and stumbled across this blog that featured the top 50 music videos of 2005. As soon as I checked out Cold Hands, Warm Heart I was hooked. Not only is the song catchy, the animation fits it like a glove. I love how simply the characters are desiged, but how complex the story telling actually is.

Check out the filmmakers at the Waverly Films website These guys have done lots and lots of music videos, including stuff for The Wallflowers, Death Cab For Cutie, and also a neat video of Jason Forrest, the composer behind the ever-popular “War Photographer” seen in Channel Frederator Episode 2.

If “Cold Hands, Warm Heart” warms your heart, check out Brendan Benson’s site and see what his band’s up to. His music is available here.

Thanks!

Juicebox Animation: “Sing-a-long With Roosevelt”

February 9th, 2006

wa050.jpg

Cliff Mueller, one of the creative brains behind Sing Along With Roosevelt decribes his film as the touching story of a musicaly inclined walrus and his search for love on the open sea.

Inspired by The Muppets’ goofy yet sincere musical numbers, Roosevelt is an homage to the love struck walrus in us all.

I interviewed Cliff Mueller for our Nextoons Film Festival last year, and asked him what the most challenging part of making his film was. “We had to make it in 3 weeks! That was definately hard. But also i think it was good… I think it made us really concentrate on getting it done. Sometimes you can get so attached to these projects.. that you fiddle with them forever and never finish!”

Thanks to Cliff, and the team of talented CG artists who put this film together!

Jim Mortensen: “First Kiss”

February 8th, 2006

first_kiss_still03.jpg

The big V-Day is coming, and what a better way to kick it off than with Jim Mortensen’s film about a blissful and unruly First Kiss. It is the story of two children too nervous to admit their love for each other. Eventually, through fate, they come together to enjoy being young… We were fortunate enough to find this film for last year’s Nextoons: The Nicktoons Film Festival, and are excited to show it again here on Channel Frederator.

Says Jim, “I started making cartoons because a girl I liked really liked cartoons. I got to liking making cartoons more than the girl got to liking me. So I went to SVA to study how to make them better.I was in my third year at the School of Visual Arts when I made this film. It started as an exercise but I wanted to take it further. Our professor instructed us to look [Read more…]

The Brothers McLeod: “Fuggy Fuggy”

February 3rd, 2006

As soon as I saw “Fuggy Fuggy”, I knew I had to contact Myles and Greg McLeod about getting it up on Channel Frederator. Their style is so distinctive, simple, and–well–I just couldn’t get enough of the little Fuggy Fuggy guy.

Says filmmaker Greg McLeod, “Fuggy Fuggy came about as a result of creative frustration, much doodling, a heavy dose of sleep deprivation (Greg’s son is teething) and a desire to come up with a successful internet based animation series.

It had to be short and have no dialogue and appeal to a broad audience. We could have gone to town with blood and gore and decapitations but there’s a lot of that done by other people and we wanted our animation to be a little more light hearted.

So Fuggy Fuggy was born. It took 6 weeks to write design and animate. And now it’s finished and the animators repetitive strain injuries [Read more…]

Blur Studio: “Aunt Luisa”

February 2nd, 2006

3.jpg

Blur’s short film projects are all labors of love, and Aunt Luisa is no exception. Written by Tim Miller, Creative Director of Blur Studios and directed by Miller and Paul Taylor, the 3 ½-minute film was one of nine films short-listed for Academy Award consideration in 2002.

Through a scotch-induced haze, Aunt Luisa has become convinced that bandleader Guy Lombardo and his Royal Canadians are roaming her home. The aging widow is losely based on one of Miller’s own relatives.

A few weeks ago, Fred Seibert and I had the pleasure of touring Blur Studio and meeting Tim Miller, the creative force behind the studio. Not only is Tim a swell guy, he has a very clear vision when it comes to the work his studio produces. By striving to take on projects that offer a high level of creativity, and “fun” for everyone involved, he has built a solid, excited team of artists and writers–many [Read more…]

Jamiroquai: “(Don’t) Give Hate A Chance”

February 1st, 2006

When Stash DVD Magazine submitted this video, they also gave us a bit of background as to how it was made which I found very interesting.

This music video was based on two days of motion capture data taken of both Jamiroquai lead vocalist Jay Kay, and background dancers (choreographed by Supple). Powerhouse design studio Partizan then took these motion files and animated them using Maya, Motion Builder, After Effects, and Renderman Artist Tools. Directed by Alex and Martin, this music video was worked scene by scene to fine tune lip synching, and of course, the dancing gorillas.

Jamiroquai is signed with Sony BMG, and (Don’t) Give Hate A Chance can be found on the album, Dynamite released in September, 2005.

Melissa

No gorillas were harmed in the making of this music video.
