Sam Henderson: “Lonely Robot Duckling”

February 16th, 2006

lonely-robot-duckling.gif

Reading through all of your vehement comments about Lonely Robot Duckling, one might think Sam Henderson’s film was shamelessly promoting a Yanni album, or that it possibly made fun of orphans and child laborers. Instead, his film did something more atrocious than that. It glorified peeing. And not peeing in toilets–but on cars, and old people… and mailmen. The peeing was done by a human and his lonely robot duckling. Not only did that lonely robot duckling appear to insult your intelligence, his stream of unadulterated urine really pissed you off. Fair enough.

Sam Henderson, I would like to personally thank you for making a film about the joys of peeing on whatever you want. It was just what I needed to watch at the end of a tough day of taking life way too seriously. Thanks also to the voice talents of Tom Kenny, who lent his voice to Robot Duckling, and continues to lend it to a little yellow guy named “SpongeBob Squarepants”.

Fabulous job.

ha! bravo, mr. henderson! i love this cartoon. it’s funny that I actually woke up the other morning thinking, “why isn’t that peeing duck on frederator? ” and then i found out CF beat me to that thought.

not only that- it’s the only cartoon to get worse comments than mine (”Brother, Can You Spare a Job?”).

encore!

I didnt really understand the cartoon…

I laughed so hard at that cartoon, I peed on a robot duck.

Actually it’s a piece of comic genius in the same vein as Andy Kaufman. Both Sam and Andy have succeeded in provoking the audience into becoming part of the show.

Couldn’t have said it better myself.

YES! YES! YES! Anyone who doesn’t understand, should go buy some copies of Magic Whistle and find out why Sam Henderson is a genius of comedy.

I wanted to give it a higher rating … but seriously, the comic strip it was based on was 10 times funnier. The pacing just works so much better when each panel — especially the last one, with three people peeing on an irked, little man — is frozen forever in time.

ArghhH! I just posted and forgot to enter the spam number!!!
Oh well, this is what I said, more or less:

I am really surprised by the number of cartoon fans out there that hate cartoons. So many negative comments!
I understand that it may not be everone’s cup of pee, but Lonely Robot Duckling’s innocent and naivety coupled with his depraved joy of public urination is a great comedic juxtaposition.
The short is so absurd that it’s funny. But it isn’t haphazard or disjointed.
It tells a complete story, albeit a silly one.
I don’t know if I would go so far as to call it genius, but maybe I am not ’smrt’ enough to appreciate it on a higher level. At the same time, I would never dismiss it as trash either. A lot of hard work goes into making a cartoon; ANY cartoon. It’s sad that so many people are willing to offhandedly ‘piss on’ (yuk yuk) somebody’s creative hard work.
Good for you Melissa for taking a stand on behalf of this short.
And Tom, I really enjoyed your short (and other works too).

“It’s sad that so many people are willing to offhandedly ‘piss on’ (yuk yuk) somebody’s creative hard work.”

there’s a reason why Matt Groening created the Comic Book Guy character in the Simpsons.

Sam, you rock! Thanks for your cartoon.

Nice job Sam!

Seeing all the negative comments reminds me of the story about how Ernest Hemingway once got a bad review because the critic didn’t like bullfighting.

So because the guy who does the voice for SpongeBob is involved I’m supposed to like this short? I don’t think so. Trust me, there isn’t a single person alive today who appreciates a good shit or piss joke then me,but this was really sub-par. This guy is king. http://www.kodanclub.com/cgi-local/comic.cgi?id=008-00008-01-006

this is what i posted to all the negative vibes folks were putting out:
“Sam’s Magic Whistle and Nick magazine comics always made me smile. So did this short.
This guy has been doing his art/comics/toons his own way since probably before all of y’all were in diapers.
I give this 2 thumbs up, i’d give more but big toes don’t count as thumbs.
Great job Sam!!!”
that’s the truth ruth!!!

I’m 30, he can’t be that old.

i’m 29. almost thirty.
i don’t think he’s that old. but these new fangled kids with their reversable clothing, fanny paks, and swatches don’t realize sam’s awesomeness…
one day.

I love Enomoto too. I found out about him from a review that compared him to an American cartoonist. Who was the American cartoonist? Some guy who obviously doesn’t know anything and nobody’s ever heard of. I think the only thing he ever did was make some animation about a robot duck or something.

….. strange…..

…creepy….
