“South Pole Joe”

December 20th, 2005

super-santa.gif
I am really happy to lead off our first-ever holiday episode with one of the funniest of the original Oh Yeah! Cartoons, Mike Bell’s Super Santa in South Pole Joe.

We first met Mike at Hanna-Barbera when he pitched us his short Commander Cork (which we stupidly did not make), and then he joined our OY! team as a writer on Dave Wasson’s Goose Lady fairy tales. And that led him to a handful of solo cartoons for us, Super Santa being the first.

Mike’s gone on to develop a live action Santa film for Paramount and Nickelodeon, and boarding and writing for (among others) Spongebob Squarepants and My Life as a Teenage Robot.

And as Eric always reminds, you can see all the Channel Frederator episodes from our Website, or subscribe to the whole series through iTunes.

As good as it gets.

Actually, I don’t know what to say about this, other than “Wow!” and “Thank you.”

Please do anthing you can for the victims of one of America’s greatest tragedies.

“Body Automatic”

December 16th, 2005

Like I wrote a few days ago, this week’s Channel Frederator show is all about the music video, a terrific example of which is Devin Clark’s “Body Automatic”. With music by Mixel Pixel, Devin’s film will have yourself enjoying the short’s intensity along with posing the question, “Did I just see what I thought I saw?” Devin’s an illustrator, graphic designer, and freelance animator in NYC. He’s got his very own Website.

“Joy Comes In The Morning”

December 15th, 2005

Another highlight of the week’s Channel Frederator episode (and of the series thus far), is a little film whipped up by Scott Friedman and Joe Ledbetter. I’ve seen “Joy Comes in the Morning” now and again, here and there, for the past few months, most notably at this year’s Ottawa International Animation Festival. While the animation pulls me in every time, it’s generally not until afterwards until I realize how well Scott and Joe have caught the vibe of the music of Xploding Plastix. I wouldn’t call this a rock ‘n’ roll video, but I walk away from “Joy” like I just walked away from one of my favorite late ’70’s Bowie songs. Man, do I root for that bunny.

Currently, Scott (”Joy’s” producer and co-director) is a designer/animator at Exhibit A here in Los Angeles. According to his site, Joe (characters/painting/co-director) is a full-time artist, also in LA.

Thanks for the film, guys.

“Shake That Ass!”

December 14th, 2005

Congratulations, Dan Meth of New York, NY. You are the first filmmaker to get two - count ‘em, two - shorts included in Channel Frederator, the World’s Original Cartoon Podcast, and for that, we thank you.

This week’s episode, that of music videos, features Dan’s “Shake That Ass!”, an already very popular Flash short with music by Splack Pack.

Dan just let me know that he’s currently directing more animated pop music videos, as well as a pair of upcoming cartoon series for the Starz network and Nerve.com. “Also I’m a musician who performs under the name of John Crave. Recently played some live rock concerts in Europe and I’m releasing a new album entitled Hot Hotties.”

Thanks for the film, Dan.

Episode 8 Premieres Today

December 13th, 2005

This week on Channel Frederator, it’s all about the music video. And kicking off the show is a Flash film by Australian filmmaker Bernard Derriman (by the way, in Australia they pronounce it Bernard, not Bernard). Grammar miscue aside, “Everyone Else Has Had More Sex Than Me” has been floating around the Web - and several major film festivals - for a while, yet it’s still as fun as [insert metaphor here]. The music is by “ephemeral novelty act” TISM.

Mr Derriman’s a great guy, and you should visit his Website if only to watch his “Arj and Poopy” shorts.

Thanks for the film, Bernard.

Channel Frederator Episode 8 premieres sometime today. When it does, you can download it here, or subscribe to the whole series through iTunes, where we’re number 2 in Arts & Entertainment podcasts.

Two reasons to be cheerful.

Some phone love from a fan…

iTunes just added a new doo-hickey to list the top podcasts (by audience size) in each category. We’re currently number 2 in Arts & Entertainment. Just a nice reminder that we’re leading Mondo, VH1, Ebert & Roper, and Disney.

What do you think?

It turns out that iTunes is soliciting customers reviews. We’ve gotten to the #3 video podcast in the world, but now it’s time to hear directly from you. If you get a chance, please open your iTunes, search the Podcast Directory for Channel Frederator, and let everyone know what you think. (It’s OK, we can take it.) Thanks, in advance.

So, whadda ’bout it?

Today’s New York Times Magazine special issue on The Year in Ideas seems to be interested in some of the same subjects as Channel Frederator.

We’ve had our swag stores up on Cafe Press for a few years now. The Times’ Rob Walker is calling it Mass-Produced Individuality.

“Prey”

December 8th, 2005

preypic011.jpg

One of the more popular films in the week’s Channel Frederator episode is Tom Kyzivat’s “Prey”. Tom’s a recent graduate from Northern Illinois University, the school where he created this student film. Channel Frederator viewers aren’t the only ones who dig “Prey”. The pencil-on-paper short made it to the top ten in this year’s Nextoons: The Nicktoons Film Festival and was the favorite film of at least one of the producers.

You can visit Tom’s Website here.

And you can - and should - watch “Prey” by downloading the show at our Website or by subscribing to the series through iTunes.

Thanks for the film, Tom.
