WHEN IT’S TIME TO CHANGE…
…you’ve got to rearrange, who your characters are and what they’re going to be. So as I mentioned yesterday, after the voice record I realized I had to go back and revisit certain characters that I had already designed because the voice actors brought out certain new aspects that the visuals didn’t reflect.
Biggest change came to a character I named GARY GEEZER, after our handsome, talented and stoic director GARY CONRAD. I had designed him as a somewhat old character but JEFF BENNETT played him a little older, crotchety and mummified than I had expected. So it was back to the drawing board for me.
When characters are so simply designed something as simple as a line can add 20 years onto their appearance. So I made some subtle changes that I think helped make the character match the voice a little better. Yeah I know, it doesn’t look a world apart from before, but now he’s got glasses, wrinkles, liver spots and an old man’s under bite. Oh and a pocket full of Metamucil and a retirement check in his pocket. Just like Alan! Kidding big guy.

And bonus points to anyone who can name what pop culture reference the title of this post is quoting.
Bloggingly yours, Manny and Alan

Some how I feel I’ll look like that when I’m 90. Wait I look likr that now….Buhhhhh! Great work!

Aha! I knew something new was being uploaded. I saw it in the little box on the side so I just waited and here it is. Why am I providing so much exposition? Jeff’s performance is quite elderly, virtually one foot in the grave elderly, so good choice in going back and making the character older.

Yea, new character fits the look much better!!! .. umm.. is it Bunch Brady - Time To Change? Steve
On June 28th, 2006 at 12:00 am
Thanks for the compliment Steve-O. Yes on the Brady Bunch. I thought you’d be too young to get that reference Stephen. I guess the multiple posts are because of this new “moderator” delay? Or are you stuttering?
On June 28th, 2006 at 12:00 am
You are correct, sir, about the new moderator delay. So if you don’t see your comment posted immediately, either we’re napping, watching cartoons, or are deeply offended at your post. Or all three. (And don’t ask how we can nap and watch cartoons at the same time).

yea.. that weird moderator thing messed me up. I thought you deleted my comment :).. but now I know you didnt
SO WHAT DO I WIN???

Well Stephen we were going to give you a new car but since it was your foul mouthed and down right offensive posts that caused this “modertaor delay” I’m afraid we will have to return the car. You kiss your mother with that mouth?

I like the older version better, even without hearing the voice recording. Wrinkles are funny!
On June 29th, 2006 at 12:00 am
Yes, wrinkles are funny, when they aren’t on you! But yes with just a few wrinkles he went from 50 something to 70 something just like that! The bent over posture helps as does the slightly too high pants and the disturbing pouch in his groinicological region. What is that? And why does it keep growing? It’s like a new continent on the human body.

Great design, Manny. I’m honored by my namesake character. When will the action figures be available?? I’m thinking spinoff.

Hey Manny! I love your line work man. So nice and crispy. Is it hand ink or digital? The character is cool too but I think he needs back hair. All old guys have back hair… wiat I’ll take a picture of myself to show you!
Too much info huh?
On June 28th, 2006 at 12:00 am
Digital inks. I still ink things by hand depending on what it’s for, but for this project digital was faster and more flawless. I actually got the technique down pat working on these turnarounds. And back hair? You mean peeking out from his collar? Or hair on the back of his head? And please no more back hair pictures of you, I still haven’t recovered from the last ones.

However you do them, I’m loving it. So do you trace in Illustrator then? As for the back hair, well I was really just kidding… it was something to say other than the usual “Great work Manny!” which you get soooooo often. You B—–d!
But maybe it would be cool to see a bit of hair coming off of his neck ya know, like old guys do where they forget the get the back of their neck shaved after a hair cut? Just a thought.
