When did Manny nail it?
![]()
Okay people, I want you honest opinion. At what point did my dear friend (for the sake of argument and commerce) Manny establish in images the survival instinct that drives Bronk’s reptilian mind? Where did he land on the delightful lunacy that fuels Bongo’s relentless good cheer? Which drawing screams, “Yes!! Yes, that’s the nose! Finally, that’s the nose!!!” Which one of these little morsels of comic development makes you bust your gut? Bloggingly yours, Manny and Alan

Thanks Art. By all means, stop what you are doing and draw something. This gives me an idea, if anyone reading these posts is interested in doing a sketch of Bronk and Bongo please do and send it to us. Um…I’ll figure out how you can send it to us and let you all know in a later post.

Nice. I like the regression in the art that is being posted. You pretty much started with the finished cartoon and are working yourself backwards to Bronk and Bongo cave paintings. Really cool drawings of the boys though….

These are great sketches, yet the characters are not much like the ones in the color pieces. Are these more recent? The dogs have grown a bit…I love seeing sketches sometimes more than color pieces. Please post more sketches…

Yes, the color stuff you have all seen is very early stuff, these sketches here are me trying to figure out and clearly define the characters. I really have had a hard time nailing smaller details like Bronk’s nose. That nose has been a thorn in my side and poor Alan has had to be subject to my irrational NOSE related out bursts! I’m in the ball park yet the details are destroying me. And quite frankly as I now begin the character turn arounds and model sheets, I’m still confronted with making final design decisions that are completely consuming me and making me stressed out. So go into animation kids if you want to bite your finger nails down to little bloody stubs!……….ah I wouldn’t have it any other way.

These drawings are wondeful! They have an energy and spirit that is elusive to many properties. When are we going to see these guys move!
On March 1st, 2006 at 12:00 am
Ah, the elusive Robert Denby. If you want to see these characters move rapidly shake your head left to right. Ah the magic of animation.

I agree with Emili. Sketches really show the heart and soul of the character and the intention of the artist. They are just fun little vestigial stage of the whole, eventual character. Also I just like the rawness of a sketch.
Manny, when exactly did you nail it? Have you nailed it? Do you nail frequently? Stop with all the nailing already…..
On March 1st, 2006 at 12:00 am
Hey Emil and John, yes I like a good sketch myself, much more than a finished piece sometimes. We will be posting more sketches, but we want to pace ourselves. Alan refuses to post the 600 drawings I’ve done of Bronk and Bongo in one posting. And to answer your question, I don’t nail much anymore…my girlfriend won’t allow it.

Ooo…purdy drawings…:) I like the one with the two of them and the nickel. The expression worn by one in the pants (Bronk?) is awesome!

Coming from you that’s a huge compliment. Thanks Anne.

Bronk has the vest, Bongo the pants, Manny wears a flea collar and Alan has the fleas. It was the only fair way to do things.

These are great Manny! Fun to see the sketches. I always look forward to seeing more stuff. Who knew a nose could cause so many problems!?

I agree with everyone. It’s nice to see the rough sketches before the final product. I especially like Bongo’s largest drawing on the bottom, the one to the left of the smaller pictures, because it looks like he could be thinking anything….sure he seems innocent, but we can only imagine what must be running through his mind…
As for Bronk’s nose, I think the upper right drawings capture his nose well. The left-most drawing of Bronk has a nose that I think is too pointy on the sides, and the picture to the bottom-left looks too flat. Sorry if this seems too critical - I don’t mean to come off that way. I’m just trying to help you out Manny, so that maybe you can save those precious nails of yours.

Yeah…seeing the drawings is one thing, seeing Manny draw them is another. Effortless is what comes to mind. These abilities will surely make a great cartoon. Especially if a deadline is involved. What takes me 1 day to compose one drawing, takes Manny 1 minute…Super good work. Cant wait to see more.!!!

“When Did Manny Nail It?” Isn’t that a porn flick starring Scott Bao? Honestly now, I love these characters. They are inherently hilarious.
The bigger the nose, the more hyper the hands, the better. And you know what they say about big noses and hyper hands…wait, that’s another movie.

I’m a little late……but I love your work and can’t wait to see the short. Awesome sketches!
